Celebrate The Small Things - Playing With Memes

Posted on August 14, 2015
It's Friday and that means it's time to celebrate the small stuff from the past week. This past week has been filled with lots of promotional activities. Aside from scheduling a few guest posts for the coming weeks and some shout-outs by fellow bloggers for my novel (Thanks Lexa!) , I created a few memes/images for social media sites:

Creating those memes took longer than expected, mainly because it took a while to come up with the black/white theme. Initially I had flames, images of burning buildings, but it didn't really work. Although there is a lot of end-of-the-world type of destruction in the story, that's not what the story is about.

The Box Of Souls focuses on a struggle between two sisters inheriting their grandmother's magic and another struggle between two brother dragons faced with extinction. Neither side is good or bad, just opposing, conflicting, and damaged in their own ways. There is a parallelism to the two conflicts, so the black/white almost yin-yang theme worked for both. It fits the story.

How did I do it? I am no graphic artist. I wish I was. But, I can manipulate images that other people create. So, after downloading a fire dragon, a little girl silhouette, and young woman shadow image from Shutterstock (all licensed) I use GIMP (a free imaging tool), and watched a few Youtube videos on how to manipulate images in GIMP to get the effect I want.

And whala!

Happy Friday!

    1. Thanks Tonja! All those years TRYING to create things in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (back when my company paid for the copy) kind of worked out. Gimp does it all, and it's free.

  2. The black-and-white theme (and the quotes) work well.

  3. You did a great job and the quotes work very well! The more you use GIMP, the easier it gets and the more you can do. Watch the other authors' promos in FB groups to find other designs you like. Congrats again on your release! Have a great weekend!
