Celebrate The Small Things : Charities
Posted on July 24, 2015
Yesterday, I watched The Good Lie with my kids. My daughter cried several times in the movie, as did I, and afterwards she went to http://www.thegoodliefund.com that was advertised at the end of the credits.

My son? Well, he had a load of questions about scenes in Sudan, but he eventually fell asleep.

My daughter wanted to help children, in some way. She got inspired to be charitable from the movie. Then I told her of the two charities to which we (my husband and I) contribute regularly: St. Jude's and Children International.

I started donating to St. Jude's when my daughter was born. It was instinctual. I felt the need to help children who struggled just to grow up. I've witnessed a handful of children go through horrible diseases. It gets depressing when your thoughts wander, especially with your baby in your arms, and you feel horrible for not helping out every possible children's charity out there. I've learned you can't help everyone, but everyone can help out at least one. So St. Jude has been the one for over a decade.

A Mouse In A House
Posted on July 12, 2015
Herman McFidigan never liked being outside. He was, after all, a small field mouse - the natural prey of any creature with wings or claws or speed or the ability to pounce at will. He was timid, suffered from a mild case of schizophrenia, and was utterly alone.

Except for the voices in his head. They kept him plenty company.

As he was preparing his meal of wheat grass and nuts, he heard a knocking at the door of the old house he was inhabiting. No one answered, naturally, since there was no one living there. The knock grew louder and Herman found himself trembling under his matchbox bed. He blew out the tiny candle on his thumbnail nightstand and covered his ears.

"They're coming to get you, Herman." The female voice in his head said.

The pounding stopped and the door creaked open. A light scent of chemicals traveled across the room with the breeze. Slow footsteps drowned out the rain slamming against the windows. He could still hear the thunder.

"You've got to get out of here, Herman!" The female voice said. "You have to get out of this house!"

"B-b-b-but, the outside world is dangerous. I will die." Herman shivered as he covered his head with his blue night shirt.

"You will die here tonight too, if you don't run," she said. "Run, Herman. Get out of here. Get out of here now! Run Herman! Run!"

As she repeated those words,  Herman scrambled to his feet and dashed out the burrowed corridor that lead to the backyard. He's never gone out of the house before, but he trusted his voices. They told him things, truths, and kept him safe all these years. He believed his voices knew more than he did, and so he listened to their advice.

He ran through the tunnel for what seemed like hours, and soon he was outside standing on a grassy field under the brilliant morning sun.

"There," said the female voice as Herman wiped dirt and grease from his blue night shirt. "Now, you will live."

I'm 40. It's No Big Thing.
Posted on July 7, 2015
My 40th birthday came and went, quietly, like a white feather gliding along the current of a mild summer wind. Did you see it? No? Well it was there, I swear!

I went to breakfast with my parents, did some construction shopping for the renovations I'm doing to the house, went to my daughter's softball game, and then went home with a throbbing headache the likes I haven't had in years. Took some Advil, ordered out, and then I went to sleep.

Pretty anti-climactic, right? Well, here's the thing. I'm incredibly superstitious about celebrating my own good fortune. I don't want to celebrate too loudly because The Fates might hear. Don't know who they are? Check this link to learn all about them. I was really into Greek Mythology when I was a kid and it stuck to me ever since. Just the idea of their imaginary existence gives me shivers.

** chuckles nervously **

I mean, The Fates are a lovely bunch of goddesses. No need to change anything ladies. Everything is good here.

:-D

Celebrate The Small Things - Feeling Busy
Posted on July 3, 2015

Have I ever mentioned how much I love the Celebrate The Small Things blog hop? I love it. By it's definitions, you have to look back at your past week and celebrate your accomplishments. And, if it was a tough week, you celebrate surviving it.

This week was a busy one. Here are my celebrations:
  • Started renovations on the 2nd floor of my house, down to the beams, including a bathroom renovation. Finally! It's been on the to-do list for a long while. The house is a bleeping mess, and I've cleaned more in 4 days than I normally do in a month, but whatever...
  • Co-hosted IWSG for July, and wrote about two authors who I think totally rock. It was so much fun to write up about the authors that I think I might include an indie author highlight in each IWSG post.
  • Finally got my novel, The Box Of Souls, Amazon, B&N, Kobo, and a couple of other places. Smashwords distribution takes a while. Going to send out an updater email and post next week.

AND.... drum roll please....

Today, July 3rd 2015, is my 40th Birthday!
~ * ~

It will be a very relaxing, low-key weekend for me and the family, but, as usual, the United States of America will celebrate my birthday with a show of fireworks at many major cities. Look to your local tv listing and newspapers for more info on that. :-D

Have a great 4th of July weekend everyone!
