Austenland, Maybe? (IWSG)
Posted on July 7, 2022

I LOVE Jane Austen novels. If I could, I would go back and live in her world, BUT.... only as Jane Austen. Or, maybe as myself. Need to think about that for a bit...

Back then, in England, women didn't have a lot of rights, or respect as writers, or respect in general. They were still considered "property". First their parents' property and then their husbands'. All women were expected to marry to acquire "freedoms" that unmarried women didn't have, and those that did not marry but managed to gain a bit of independence were thought poorly of by the rest of their society. Sure, there were few grand widowers who, after their rich husbands died and left them a fortune, also ran things alongside the men in their communities, but those were a handful.

When reading about Jane Austen's life, I was surprised to see how she was considered as such. A woman of age without ever being married and having made a fortune on her own hard work? Such scandal! Many mothers would clutch their pearls and faint at the thought of their daughters looking up to her. She was an amazing figure of her time, going against the grain, and I would love to have witnessed her break social barriers.

However, my short tolerance for sexism will probably get me into a ton of trouble. I can see myself slapping a ton of men and women for being so complacent. So, after thinking about it more, maybe I'll just stay where I am and only READ about how things were way back then.

  1. If you're willing to zip back 150 years more and get a Viking to sail you across the big water... The Lenni-Lenape tribe treated people as equals. If you wished to be known as a woman storyteller and keeper, that would be not only accepted but revered.
Perhaps one day the world with modernize to our old, "savage" ways.

I've tried to read Jane Austin's books. I get lost and confused about relationships because everyone seems to refer to each with formal address. My first try, way back in high school, it took a month until someone helped me by explaining that two characters were husband and wife, and calling each other Mrs and Mr such-and-such was supposed to be romantic. And I've been pretty sure ever since then that I have no idea what romance is. 🤣

For the IWSG July prompt asking which book world I would live in, I narrowed it down to three choices.
One is a short-story I published. One is from a popular series. And one is better known from television, but there are books. It's all on my blog.

    1. Oooooh, Viking era sounds fantastic. I haven't read any books based on Viking societies, but I have watched a Vikings series and The Last Kingdom and the women totally kick butt in those shows. Hmmm.... to be a Viking...

  2. I passed on any time in history because I come from peasant stock and assume I'd land in that world as a chamber maid or something. LOL
